Life Group Leader Guide
📌 LEADER'S BULLETIN
Leader Heart Check
You are not just facilitating a conversation this week. You are shepherding people who may be carrying beliefs they have never said out loud. Lead with the same gentleness Jesus showed at the pool, and trust that He is already at work in the room. You do not have to fix anyone. You get to point them to the One who can.
Attendance Reminder
Please log your group's attendance in the Church App or email by Sunday. Your faithfulness in tracking helps us stay connected as a church family.

🔑 CONNECTION KEY (Leader Briefing)
Core Theme: Many of us live inside the house of grace while still believing lies that keep us stuck, and Jesus meets us with a simple question: "Do you want to get well?"
Key Discussion Goals:
Help group members identify the "bad beliefs" they have been carrying about grace, their circumstances, and their rules.
Distinguish between contributing factors (what makes life harder) and determining factors (what decides our outcome).
Encourage honest conversation about excuses without shame or condemnation.
Lead the group toward trusting a relationship with God over a formula for results.
Leader Tip: This topic can touch tender places. Some people in your group have real circumstances, such as painful family backgrounds, financial pressure, or lost opportunities, and they may hear "excuses" as a dismissal of their story. Lead by affirming that those hardships are real before inviting the group to ask what they have allowed those hardships to decide. Share first from your own life to set the tone, and be patient with silence. Honesty grows when people feel safe, not when they feel pressed.
Key Phrase: "This contributes to my challenges, but it doesn't determine my outcome."
Sermon Points
3 Bad Beliefs That Trap You.
1. Grace Is Complicated.
Bethesda means "house of grace," and yet a man lay there for thirty eight years without receiving it. He lived by conditions: if I get there first, then God will move. He carried a conditional mindset in an unconditional place. We can sit in the house of grace, surrounded by church and Scripture, without ever receiving a revelation of grace. The standard is not our performance. It is God's love, which reached us while we were still sinners and still helpless.
Reflection Questions:
Where do you catch yourself thinking, "If I do this, then God will do that"? What has that cost you?
What is the difference between being near grace and actually receiving it?
Ezekiel describes God speaking life over someone who could do nothing for themselves. What does that picture stir in you?
How would your week look different if you believed God's love is not measured by your performance?
2. My Circumstances And People Won't Let Me Move Forward.
When Jesus asked the man if he wanted to get well, he answered with explanations: no one helps me, others get there first, I am doing what I can. Bad beliefs make good excuses, and over time his condition had become his identity. Adam did the same in the garden, pointing to the woman instead of owning the moment. Our circumstances are contributing factors, but they are not determining factors. Job lost nearly everything, yet his internal conviction, not outside pressure, decided his response. Jesus did not argue with the man's excuses. He simply said, "Get up! Pick up your mat and walk."
Reflection Questions:
What is one contributing factor in your life that you have sometimes treated as a determining factor?
Why do you think Jesus asked, "Do you want to get well?" instead of simply healing the man?
Which of the man's excuses do you hear most often in your own thinking: "no one helps me," "they keep doing it to me," "I'm doing the best I can," or "others are better than me"?
What would it look like for you to accept your situation, adapt to it, and act anyway?
3. My Rules Can Determine My Outcome.
The man believed he had to get into the water first to be healed. He never realized that what he needed was the water in him. Jesus said rivers of living water flow from the one who believes. Religion offers a formula for an outcome, but God invites us into a relationship. Even after his healing, the religious leaders measured the man by the rules instead of rejoicing in the miracle. God desires mercy and the knowledge of Him more than our sacrifices, and in Christ we have been clothed with Him.
Reflection Questions:
What rules or formulas have you relied on to feel right with God or to get a result from Him?
How does knowing God personally differ from following a set of religious expectations?
What would change if you believed the living water is already in you, not somewhere you have to reach first?
How can our group help one another move from performing for God to walking with Him?
🛠Practical Application
The Challenge
This week, name one bad belief you have been living under, whether about grace, your circumstances, or your rules. Write it down, then write what God's Word says in its place. Take one concrete step of obedience that you have been putting off because of that belief, and share it with someone in your group so they can encourage you.
Audit / Reflection
Ask yourself honestly: What is my "mat," the thing I have been lying on, identifying with, or explaining away? Which excuses do I use most often? Where am I treating a contributing factor as if it were a determining factor? Take a few quiet minutes to answer before the group time ends.
Prayer Focus
Pray together that every member would receive a fresh revelation of grace, not just live near it. Ask the Holy Spirit to expose the beliefs that have kept them stuck, and to give them courage to answer Jesus' question with a yes. Close by praying over each person, asking God to let living water flow from within them.
📣 Weekly Declaration
I am deeply loved by God, and His grace is not complicated or conditional. My circumstances may contribute to my challenges, but they do not determine my outcome. I refuse to let excuses become my identity. I choose to get up, trust Jesus, and walk in what He has already done for me. I live from a relationship with Him, not a formula, and rivers of living water flow from within me. Amen.
