Icebreaker: “THE NAME GAME”

Ask everyone to share the meaning of their name or a nickname someone has given them. How does that name or nickname shape how we see ourselves?

1. You Must Confront Who You’ve Been.

Genesis 32:24, James 4:4-10 [MSG]

Jacob’s whole life was marked by struggle, hustle, and control. But in this moment, God isolates him so He can identify him. The fight wasn’t with Esau. It was with God. And before God can transform Jacob, He forces him to face himself: the deceiver, the runner, the fixer, the one who always grabbed for what God would willingly give. Sometimes God removes the noise so we can no longer outrun the truth. There are versions of us that cannot cross into our next season.

Reflection Questions:

  • What parts of your old self do you feel God is highlighting in this season?

  • Where do you sense God inviting you to stop running and be honest?

  • Jacob had to be alone to hear God — what distractions do you need to confront?

2. You Will Be Broken Before You’re Built.

Genesis 32:25, John 2:19 [NKJV]

God dislocated Jacob’s hip, not to harm him, but to humble him. Jacob thought endurance was his strength, but God was shifting him from striving to surrender. This is the holy tension: We think we’re falling apart, but God is actually putting us together. The breaking is not punishment. It’s preparation. It’s not destruction. It’s reconstruction. Jesus showed us the same pattern: the temple had to be broken before it could be raised in resurrection power.

Reflection Questions:

  • Where have you felt “broken” lately — and how could God be using that to build you?

  • What strength has God been gently removing so you can rely on His?

  • What’s one area you need to surrender instead of strive?

3. Your Mindset Must Shift To Match Your Destiny.

Genesis 32:26 [NKJV]

God doesn’t just change Jacob’s path; He changes Jacob’s name. Jacob becomes Israel, because identity always comes before destiny. We cannot enter our new season with old thinking, old language, or old cycles. Many of us want transformation, but resist the destruction required for it. Something has to break. Maybe it’s a mindset, a habit, a belief, a lie. Whatever it is, before something new can be built, something must be broken.

Reflection Questions:

  • What is an old mindset God is asking you to let go of?

  • What “name” have you lived under (fearful, insecure, hustler, controller) that God never gave you?

  • How would your decisions change if you saw yourself the way God sees you?

4. You Must Destroy What Has Kept You From What God Is Bringing You Into.

Jeremiah 1:9-10 [NET], Genesis 32:31

God tells Jeremiah He will uproot, tear down, destroy, then rebuild. This is because God is revealing this truth: some breakthroughs require demolition. We cannot build a God-destiny on a broken foundation of fear, shame, pride, or old language. God cannot use a mouth that fear still controls. Our words shape our direction. Our confession shapes our identity. Our language must align with what heaven has spoken over us.

Reflection Questions:

  • What language (self-talk, fear talk, doubt talk) do you need to “destroy”?

  • What new words do you sense God wants you to speak over your life?

  • What is one habit or pattern that cannot go with you into your next season?

THIS WEEK’S DECLARATION

“This week, God is breaking what needs to break in me so He can build what He’s destined for me. I release who I was. I receive who I am becoming. I walk in surrender, identity, and blessing. I may limp, but I am not losing. I am being transformed — in Jesus’ name. Amen.”
