Lesson 3: Disciple With Intentionality | The Heart of Growth
We've explored reaching the lost and shepherding with care. Now, let's talk about the ultimate goal: helping everyone in your group become a fully devoted follower of Jesus. This is the great adventure of discipleship!
Discipleship is more than just a program; it's the core of why we make disciples. It’s about moving from simply sharing information to fostering real, life-changing transformation.
The Great Commission: Our Mandate
Our mission as a church and as Life Group leaders is crystal clear in Jesus' final words:
“Go and make disciples…teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”
— Matthew 28:19–20 (NIV)
Notice the goal isn't just to teach them, but to teach them to obey. True discipleship is about forming Christlike character that shows up in everyday life. The Apostle Paul described this passionate commitment with a powerful image:
“I feel as if I’m going through labor pains for you again, and they will continue until Christ is fully developed in your lives.”
— Galatians 4:19 (NLT)
Discipleship is a labor of love. It requires patience, investment, and a deep desire to see Christ "fully developed" in the people you lead.
The Method: Life-to-Life Investment
Growth doesn't happen by chance; it's the result of intentional investment. We call this Life-to-Life Investment.
This means getting to know people deeply and personally, just as a shepherd knows his flock:
“Know your sheep by name; carefully attend to your flocks; Don't take them for granted.”
— Proverbs 27:23-24 (MSG)
Be intentional and consistent, but remember to adjust your approach for each person. Discipleship isn't a one-size-fits-all program. It’s a tailored journey of walking alongside someone.
A crucial reminder: Our own pursuit of Jesus determines how far we can lead others. You cannot take people where you are not going yourself. Your personal walk with God is the foundation of your discipleship ministry.
The Measure: Are They Growing?
A disciple’s development should be measurable, not just a vague feeling. We can look for growth in key areas:
Prayer: Is their conversation with God becoming more personal and consistent?
Word: Are they engaging with the Bible personally and applying it?
Obedience: Are they actively putting their faith into practice?
Service: Are they discovering and using their gifts to serve others?
The Goal: Multiplication
The ultimate language of discipleship is multiplication.
Our success as disciplers is not just in what we pour into them, but in whether they are equipped and empowered to pour into someone else. Are we creating followers, or are we creating disciple-makers?
Your Turn to Grow
Let's move from theory to practice. Take some time to prayerfully reflect on your own discipleship journey.
📖 Reflection Questions:
Who am I intentionally walking with right now, and do they know it? (Clarity in relationship is key.)
Is my discipleship producing obedience or just knowledge? (Are the people I'm leading putting their faith into action?)
Am I multiplying disciples who make disciples, or am I just maintaining followers? (This challenges us to think about the end goal.)
💡 Practical Exercise:
This week, take a bold step of intentionality:
Identify 1–2 people in your group who seem hungry to grow and who you believe could eventually lead and disciple others.
Create a simple growth pathway for them. This doesn't have to be complex! It could look like:
Meeting for coffee once a month to talk about their walk with God.
Giving them a simple book to read and discuss together.
Inviting them to co-lead a discussion or prayer time in your group.
Asking them, "Who is one person you could encourage this week?"
You Are a Catalyst!
Leader, you are a catalyst for eternal growth in the lives of others. By discipling with intentionality, you are not just building a better Life Group - you are investing in the eternal kingdom of God and fulfilling the Great Commission.
We believe in you and are praying for your impact to multiply!
