Lesson 1: Reach The Lost | The Heart of Our Mission

We are so thrilled you've stepped into the incredible adventure of leading a Life Group. This journey is about so much more than just managing a meeting—it's about joining God in His amazing work. And it all starts with a heart to reach people who are far from God, just like Jesus did.

Let's begin with the most important "why" of all.

Our Mission: The "Why" Behind Everything

Our mission as a church, and the very heartbeat of every Life Group, comes straight from the mission of Jesus:

“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

— Luke 19:10 (NIV)

Let that sink in for a moment. Jesus' primary mission was to seek out and rescue those who were lost. As His followers, this is our mission, too! Your Life Group isn't a holy huddle for people who have it all together; it's a search-and-rescue center and a recovery room filled with grace.

A New Way of Seeing

Evangelism can feel like a scary word, but it’s not about a program or a pressured speech. It’s a lifestyle and a heart posture to see people as Jesus sees them.

Jesus once told His disciples:

“Open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.”

— John 4:35 (NIV)

He's telling us to look at our neighborhoods, workplaces, and schools with spiritual eyes. The people around us aren't projects; they are a harvest, ready and waiting for an invitation into God’s family.

This starts with compassion. When Jesus looked at crowds of people, the Bible says:

“He had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.”

— Matthew 9:36 (NIV)

The Greek word for compassion here, Splagchnizomai, means a gut-wrenching empathy, a feeling deep in your core. Jesus didn't just feel sorry for people; He was moved in His innermost being.

We can’t reach someone we don’t weep for in prayer.

If you ever feel your heart for the lost growing cold, the solution isn't always more training. It's often more time in Jesus’ presence. As you sit with Him, His heart for people will naturally become your heart. Evangelism flows from this overflow, not from a place of guilt or obligation.

Let's Get Practical

So, how do we put this heart of compassion into action? Here are a few simple, practical ways to make your Life Group a place that reaches the lost.

1. The "Empty Chair" Principle:

Make an "empty chair" in your group a visual reminder and a prayer point. It’s a simple way to say, "There is always room for one more." It keeps the mission front and center for everyone.

2. Be Intentionally Welcoming:

Think about your group from a newcomer's perspective. Is the atmosphere warm and inviting? Do you explain things clearly? A little hospitality goes a long way in making someone feel like they belong.

3. Share Your Story:

Your testimony is your most powerful tool. You don't need a theology degree; you just need to be able to share what Jesus has done in your life. People can argue with your beliefs, but they can't argue with your story

Your Turn to Grow

Let's take a moment to reflect and put this into practice. Grab a journal or just take a minute to think through these questions.

📖 Reflection Questions:

  • Who in my life (a coworker, neighbor, family member, or friend) is far from God that I can begin praying for and intentionally invite to Life Group?

  • What is one thing my Life Group can do to be more welcoming to a brand-new person?

  • When was the last time I shared my testimony with someone?

💡 Practical Exercise:

This week, we encourage you to role-play inviting someone to your Life Group with a co-leader, spouse, or friend. It sounds simple, but practicing the words, "Hey, I'm part of this really great group that meets on [night]. We'd love to have you join us!" can build your confidence tremendously.

You've Got This!

Remember, leader, you are not in this alone. The same Jesus who came to seek and save the lost is with you, filling you with His compassion and courage. Your open heart and your welcoming group can be the very thing God uses to change someone's eternity.

We are cheering you on!
